If the saying that the enemy of your enemy is your friend, then Apple and Facebook should be very good friends. But the relationship between the two companies is starting to become more and more tens, according to the New York Times. The reason of this conflict is PIng, the social network developed by Apple for iTunes, which was released on September 1.

After the debut of the new social network the executive director of Apple, Steve Jobs, was asked why they preferred to build a new network although they could have created applications for Facebook, just like other music web sites have done. Steve Jobs answered: Apple tried to work with Facebook, but Facebook wanted too much.

Despite these differences, Apple used some programming interfaces used by Facebook to allow users to find their friends on Facebook while using the Ping social network.

After only 1 day, this application was blocked by Facebook. The reason invoked by people inside the company was that Ping would have created too much traffic, which would have caused some infrastructure problems.

In an official statement, FAcebook said that right now they are working with Apple to resolve the situation. In the statement they also said that the two companies have successfully worked together in the past and they are very open for future partnerships.  Facebook however omitted to mention what was the problem, and Apple had no reaction to this statement for now.

The iTunes application is used by more than 160 million people, according to latest polls created by Apple. But for now it’s not clear how Apple could have had more traffic sent to Facebook, since only a small part of these users created a Ping account.

The development principles followed by Facebook are saying that developers that have more traffic then the daily limit must contact the company to negotiate the contract. In this context, it’s not clear why Facebook refused to work together with Apple to solve this problem before deciding to block Ping’s access.

Maybe because Mark Zuckerberg, testing the Ping network released by Apple, discovered that someone created a fake account on his name?
