Nobody from Microsoft invented the mouse. However almost all their operating systems and programs are centered around this simple controller. And despite the fact that Microsoft tried to show us how the mouse of the future should be, now they are trying to convince us that the digital rodent is no longer necessary. It may be replaced by the adaptive keyboard.
Or at least, partially replaced. This new keyboard concept combines a few of the hardware ideas of the latest years, with a new software implementation, expanding the operating system outside the monitor of the PC. This because the adaptive keyboard is a simple touch screen.
And the upper side has a free area, for supplemental functionality. But the software recognizes the cropped spaces of the keyboard and knows to only display content in the free areas. Whether they are
letters or icons of various commands. The keyboard can use any language of the globe through the help of a single click.
And when we open a known program, like a program fom the Office family, the keyboard takes most of the menu features. So you no longer need to use the mouse. And in the end, the imagination of the programmers is the only limit. Unfortunately, we are not talking about a product that is going to be released on the market, at least not in the nearest future.
We are talking however about a concept, a concept that will be made available to contestants of the UIST Student Innovation Contest 2010. Because Microsoft wants to see first what things will be able to be done through the help of this adaptive keyboard. After this contest, they will decide if they will release this keyboard on the market. Let’s view however the video below to see what Microsoft has in mind.
