Tabs represent an almost mandatory feature for those programs that run in multiple instances. Although they are most commonly present in web browsers, tabs can prove to be very practical in other types of applications as well. For example, in the Office programs.

As Microsoft Office is the most used office uit, I bet that many users, especially those who are working with different types of documents opened simultaneously, might prefer tabs in a window rather than many windows opened on the taskbar.

Until now, Microsoft didn’t considered the implementation of this feature. Happily, tabs can be integrated in some of the applications that form the Microsoft Office suite with the help of an addon.

OfficeTab

The Addon in question is named OfficeTab and it’s a piece of software that was developed in China. Make no mistake in believing that although it’s made in China it has the quality of the cloned mobile phones. It’s a stable application, with high ergonomics and a full series of features.

Installing OfficeTab is easy and can be done without any difficulties. All you have to do is close all Microsoft Office programs during the installation process. During the installation, and also later, you can choose what Microsoft Office program are going to use tabs. Normally, the tab bar is going to be visible in Word, Excel and PowerPoint.

Features and Options

OfficeTab is not only a simple tab bar for opened documents. The functionality of the addon is close to the one of the tabbed browsing extensions for web browsers.

Some of it’s features are:

- selecting the programs for which this addon is active

- reordering tabs with the help of drag & drop feature

- CTRL+N To open a new tab

- closing a tab by pressing the scroll button or double click.

- double click on the tab bar to open a new tab

- changing tabs can be done using the CTRL+TAB combination

- if a star appears on a tab it means that a document is not saved.

- you can choose where the tab bar is going to be displayed: above the document, under the document, right left ( vertically ).

- you can set the dimensions of the tabs

- there are 11 available themes

- you can configure fonts and colors

OfficeTab is compatible to 32 bits Microsoft Office 2003 and 2007. It only works in Word and Excel ( for Microsoft Office 2010 ) according to the developer.

Unfortunately OfficeTab is not completely free. You can use it for free, for 30 days. After this trial period the personalization features ( colors, fonts , etc ) will be disabled for users that are using it for free. If this is not an inconvenience for you, you can use it for as long as you wish.
