Most of the times, releasing a new smart phone based on Android means that that device will be successful. This is probably what Dell had in mind when they released Aero. But they failed, they failed regarding the software but also regarding the hardware part of the device.
The device released yesterday is powered by a Marvel processor, 624 MHZ. This is the first disadvantage, if we were to think about the fact that most smartphones running on Android have 1 GHZ processors.
Another disadvantage is.. the operating system of the smart phone.
Dell Aero runs on Android 1.5, an older version of the Google Platform, which is outdated regarding functionality and performance.
We don’t want to talk much about this detail, but we do have one question: why release a phone based on an Android version that is 1 year old ?!
This has an impact on the image of the Dell company, but it also has some impact on the image of the Android brand. Android 1.5, or Cupcake, made it’s debut in April 2009, six months after the first Android phone was released on the market. Since then, Google Android received four major upgrades.
We are talking about an improved interface, adding new characteristics and a more faster response time compared to the Cupcake version.
Dell tried to make up to this by implementing some text recognition technology or by adding some useful applications like Facebook, Quick Office, Microsoft Exchange Mail, Quick Office or a search manager.
Overall however, they didn’t managed to recover the months of innovations and improvements that can be found in the latest Android versions.
No matter how we look at it, a phone that runs on Android 1.5 will be slower and more inferior compared to a device that runs on the most recent version of the operating system.
Dell Aero will also have problems regarding the purchase of applications, because most of them are compatible with the 2.0 Android versions or sooner.
This smartphone is not the first mistake made by Dell regarding the operating system. A week and a half ago, the company released the Streak tablet that also runs on an earlier Android version, the Android 1.6
Dell Aero is available in the US at $100 with a subscription an $300 with no subscription package.
