Currently, the DDR3 memory is in full display of forces, being preferred in the desktop market but also on the notebooks market, regardless if the platform is Intel or AMD. Still, although present on the market for a few years now, this memory hasn’t reached its full potential, being held back by the controllers inside CPU’s.

They officially support up to DDR3 1333 MHZ, bu there are memories that can reach even 2625 MHZ. Sandy Bridge will not change the situation, however Bulldozer should make things work with 1866 MHZ modules. But even so, a sufficient overclocking margin will remain. Still, the officials of major companies are already thinking about a new RAM standard, DDR4.

This was already forgotten in the video cards industry. The RAM modules however will truly reach their potential only in 2015. The official specifications will be finalized in 2011 and we are going to be able to see the first samples only in 2012. The frequencies are between 2133 MHZ and 4266 MHZ and the voltage should not be more than 1.2 V.
Further more, with DDR4, things will move on to a 3D production , in which chips are placed also on above the other. companies are considering up to 8 overlapped layers, which would significantly increase the capacity, and this solution would be very cost effective!
