During the SIGGRAPH 2010 conference ( Special Interest GRoup on GRAPHics and Interactive Techniques ), the availability of the first driver created for desktop processing environments with WebGL support was announced. It can offer 3D graphics on the Internet without the need of installing plugins.
We are referring to the AMD OpenGL ES 2.0 driver, which was developed to help software developers to create 3D content, for a better and faster rendering in open source web browsers, this way helping in the creation of some web experience close to the one of an application.
Also, in addition to the 3D content support and an improved web experience, the new AMD driver allows software developers to use personal computers or work stations with AMD graphics in creating applications based on OpenGL ES 2.0 for smartphones, graphical tablets or other portable devices. The OpenGL ES programming environment eases the work of developers in making PC programs work on mobile devices, without compromising the user experience, regardless of the used equippment.
Currently, the open cross platform WebGL standard is under development, which is going to be released by the end of this year. It is under development in the Khronos studios, and the representatives of the company said that web browsers developers like Apple ( Safari ), Google ( Chrome ), Mozilla ( Firefox ) and Opera ( Opera ) are all supporters of this new platform.
The OpenGL ES 2.0 driver from AMD is available with the release of the ATI Catalyst 10.7 beta suit. The OpenGL ES 2.0 driver will be compatible with all graphic products from AMD released starting 2008, including ATI Radeon graphics for desktop, ATI Mobility Radeon and ATI FirePro.
