Windows Embedded Compact 7

Microsoft announced in June a major change on their operating systems for small devices. Known until now as Windows Embedded CE, the new version will also bring a change in the name. From now on, it will be called Windows Embedded Compact 7.

The new version is dedicated to devices like digital cameras, GPS systems or systems for autos. Probably the most interesting usability will be represented by the graphical tablet, iPad like, manufacturers already announcing a series of competitors for the product released by Apple a few months ago.

New Features

One of the most important new features of Windows Embedded Compact 7 is the multi touch interface, with the help of which users will be able to even use the zoom for by simultaneously removing the fingers from the display, just like on the iPad, iPhone, etc. This edition is not at all surprising, because lately the number of gadgets with touch screen displays have gotten bigger.

Another major news is the integration of the Internet Explorer browser with support for Adobe Flash 10.1 and Silverlight ( developed by Microsoft as an Adobe Flash alternative ) and also it’s compatibility with MPEG 4 and HD formats. Also, office support is also integrated.

Microsoft didn’t ignore the requirements of business men, so the new Windows Embedded Compact 7 will also include support for Microsoft Exchange 2010 and Microsoft AirSync, which allow access to emails, contacts list and calendar. Further more, data transfer between two PC’s or two devices will be able to be done through the help of the Windows 7 Device Stage utility. And also, Windows 7 Embedded Compact 7 will allow synchronization between DLNA ( Digital Living Network Alliance ) and a new media catalog, as it can be noticed from the screenshot below:

Less pleasant for users, the DRM technology ( Digital Rights Management ) will also be available on the new version of the operating system.

As up to now, Windows Embedded Compact 7 will be compatible with processors built on the x86, ARM, MIPS and SH architecture, but a new version brings support for Dual Core processing units offered by ARMv6 and SH. Further more, there will also be an utility, named Wi-Fi Positioning System which will locate wireless networls, but also the blueTooth 3.0 compatibility which provides better speeds than BlueTooth 2.0.

For the moment, these are the details offered by Microsoft regarding Windows Embedded Compact 8, which will be released sometime this year. Until then, Microsoft offers a preview version of the operating system on their site, with some limitations. It’s rumored that the first device which will run on Windows Embedded Compact will be Asus eeePad EP10 ITC, which was already officially presented by Asus. This will be however available on the market sometime next year, so until then we might also see other devices running on this operating system.
