LG Electronics, Samsung Electronics, Sony Pictures Entertainment and Valens Semiconductor have formed, recently, an alliance which will promote a new standard in transmitting the the video high definition signal.
BDBaseT Alliance promotes the HDBaseT standard, which uses for audio-video purposes the classic ethernet cable ( with four pairs ) and it seams that this is a great rival for the classic HDMI, offering superior performances in transmitting 1080 HD video signal or 3D images, as well as the audio signal. Also, this standard makes possible data transmission using the integrated 100 mbps Ethernet connectio.
The main advantage of the HDBaseT is the use of the classical cable used in networks, CAT5e/Cat6 with RJ-45 connections, much cheaper than the HDMI cable and which can reach longer lengths ( more than 100 meters without amplification, compared to the maximum 15 meters of the HDMI cables ).
Another advantage is the fact that the technology allows to connect multiple receivers and devices that generates video signal in the network, a device will be able to generate image to any TV from the network. Interconnection made in star topology or by chaining will allow the powering of the devices through the HDBaseY cable, even if the 100 watts are not enough to power a big dimensions display.
The complete specifications of the HDBaseT 1.0 standard, respectively the technology named 5 Play which supports HD video, Audio, 100 BaseT Ethernet and power of up to 100 W on Cable 5e/6 can be found here: http://www.hdbaset.org/files/HDBaseT%20Alliance%20incorporatation_spec%20annoucement_Nereus_FINAL.PDF
