A very practical way to go on vacation is by personal car. And not just inside your country, but to others as well. By going on vacation with your personal car, you have the freedom of choosing your route and to visit many places that you might have missed if you were to choose the train or plane.

However, when you leave on vacation with your personal car you first have to establish your route. Weather you want to find the fastest route or you want to stop on the road to visit different places, it’s very important to have a well established route before you leave.

For this purpose, on the internet there are a few sites that helps you find the best route. These are web sites where, basically, all you have to do is choose the starting place an destination. Other than the best rout, on the sites you can also find a lot of useful information, like the distance you have to go and the on road housing options.

Map24.Com

This is a very site that I have personally used many times before going on vacation with my personal car. This is why I can say that the information offered here and the established routes are most of the times very correct.

You pick the starting point and destination. If there are many cities with the same time, you will have to make a pick by hand. After the cities have been selected, the most rout will be showed on a map with a  highlighted color.

You will know, among other things, the distance you have to travel and required time. There are three ways of displaying the information: satellite, map and hybrid.

Map24 has a simple interface that makes reading information and feature use very simple. Above the map you have a toolbar with different useful features, among which we mention printing and marking specific areas on the map.

This site can be used for free, without creating an account. However, if you decide to create an account you can get some special features. For example, you can save different destinations for faster use the next time you visit the site.

viamichelin.com

Maybe the best and bigger route planner is Viamichelin. Other than establishing routs, Viamichelin also offers a great quantity of useful information.

Route Planning can be made by different criteria. You can choose the fastest route, the shortest route, or the more economical one. For each route, you can see the distance, time and fuel costs. Weather forecast is also available for your desired route.

Exactly like on a GPS, on Viamichelin can see a lot of interest points that you may encounter on the road: restaurants, hotels, touristic objectives, administrative offices, malls, etc. On the map there are also displayed the speed limits for certain roads. It’s true that the information is different from country to country. Western Europe has more data than Eastern Europe.

Online Maps

Google, Yahoo, Bring and other online maps can also show you the route between two points. It doesn’t, however, offer the useful information the other sites offer. However, if you only care to get informed very fast, then it’s OK to use them.

You will find out which is the fastest route and some additional information. For example, Yahoo shows you the distance and travel time, as well as other precise details for following the route.

Even if they are very useful, you shouldn’t rely only on these web sites when you go on a trip. Sometimes the information might not be so correct.

On the other hand, these are not the only web sites for route planning. If you know other ones and you think you are good, we would love for you to share it with us and our readers, just drop a comment below.
