As I am sure you probably know, Ubisoft has recently released a new game from the Splinter Cell series, a series that I have found it to be great and I liked playing it a lot. On April 13, 2010, Sam “revived” in the hearts of the fans and offered them, once again, the opportunity to sneak, hide and infiltrate along with him. In this post, we are going to convince you why this game deserves to be played and what it has to offer.
For the beginning, we are going to talk about the single player campaign, which even if it’s short is very good. Right from the first moment of the game we will control Sam Fisher, which compared to other games how has a “higher” purpose and his goal is to save a girl, named Sarah Fisher, which he believed to be dead. In any moment in the single player campaign we will be tested and we will have to use all of Sam’s skills, and all the gadgets he has in order to take one step closer to seeing Sarah again. We are not going to reveal details about the story line, you will have to play the game in order to find them out.
Besides the main story line, the games also comes with a new module, named Deniable Ops. Because the name is very vague and does not provide many details I will try to explain a bit better. In this mode, you will be able to pick two secret agents named Archer and Kestrel. Besides the possibility to pick our character, we will also be able to pick the gaming mode: Hunter Mode and Last Stand. In Hunter Mode we will be assigned a number of people which be have to assassinate without being discovered, of course, and if we are discovered the number of enemies will increase a lot. Last Stand is a mode that presents the defense of a device called EMP. The people that want to destroy the EPM will come in 20 “waves”, each wave will have a bigger difficulty. Of course, the modes above can be played in multi player as well, thorugh Xbox Live / Internet or by using the split screen feature.
The game also comes with a new feature, and this is the possibility to mark and take down multiple characters. This is possible only after we kill an enemy using an melee attack. The new ability of Sam Fisher is named Mark & Kill, which is a very suggestive name.
Gameplay: We think that we managed to give you an idea about the storyline of the game and about it’s modes, and now let’s talk about gameplay. The game is impressive regarding gameplay, the developer gave us a lot of deadly attacks, weapons and gadgets. Besides the different weapons we can use to silence any enemy from a distance, we now have the option to take him down using our fists or use the enemy as a human shield when we are in trouble. To go over the missions without encountering too much resistance, Ubisoft now gives us the option of climbing on objects like cars, boxes, pips and almost all objects in our surroundings that can help of jump the enemy. The only thing that is disturbing is the way in which Sam runs, this being more like the walk of a man who is struggling to maintain the balance.
Graphics: One thing is for sure. Splinter Cell has an amazing graphics, from shadows and up to the last detail of boxes, cars and so on. We will notice right from the start the quality of shadows, as well as the possibility of creating others to be able to sneak, by shooting the light bulbs that we find on our way. The textures of the characters are very detailed, making them very real. Besides the fact that the textures of characters and buildings are very well designed, the game also comes with a variety of textures, this way we won’t get the repetitive feeling.
Sound: songwriters Kaveh Cohen and Michael Nielsen have worked with the Groove Addicts record house to create the music for Splinter Cell: Conviction. this game being the first in which the they worked together. Voice acting is mostly ok, sometimes making us laugh.
Conlusion: Well, since I am a hard core fan of Splinter Cell I can only tell you this: The game impressed me a lot, not only because of the storyline but also by the multitude of gadgets, weapons and possibilities. I can’t tell you that the previous games were bad, but I think that this is the best one from the series. I highly recommend you give it a try. You won’t be sorry.
